Top Agency Lists

Methodology

How these lists are built, and just as importantly, what they cannot tell you.

  1. Step 1

We define the category by the job, not the label

Every list starts with the decision a buyer is actually making. “Best ecommerce agency” is not a decision; “we cannot produce enough creative to keep our ad account learning” is. Categories are drawn so that agencies inside them are genuinely comparable.

  2. Step 2

We build the candidate set from public evidence

Candidates come from agency websites, published case studies, named client work, stated service scope, platform partner directories, and public review profiles. We do not accept submissions in exchange for placement and we do not run a pay-to-list program.

  3. Step 3

We read what each agency says about itself, closely

Positioning, service lists, named clients, and self-reported figures are all recorded from primary sources. Where an agency publishes a statistic about itself, we attribute it as a stated figure rather than presenting it as verified fact.

  4. Step 4

We assign one use case per agency

Each agency is matched to the single situation it is strongest for. Where an agency is a poor fit for part of the category, we say so in a “worth knowing” note rather than leaving it out. An agency that appears on several lists is described differently on each, because the job changes.

  5. Step 5

    We do not rank

There is no number one. Ranked lists imply a general ordering that does not survive contact with a specific brief, and they reward whoever is willing to claim the top slot. Ordering on our lists is editorial sequencing for readability, not a score.

  6. Step 6

We date everything and correct it

Every list carries the date it was last reviewed. Agencies change ownership, lose teams, and drop services, and a list that does not show its age is not much use. Corrections are welcome from anyone, including the agencies themselves.

What these lists are not

Not a performance ranking. These are not verified performance rankings. We do not audit agency ad accounts and we do not have access to client results beyond what each agency publishes. Confirm current capabilities, scope, pricing, and relevant case studies directly with each agency before hiring.

Not exhaustive. There are thousands of competent marketing agencies. A shortlist of five to eight is useful precisely because it is short, which means good agencies are missing from every list here.

Not a substitute for references. The single most predictive thing you can do before hiring is speak to two current clients in your revenue band and business model. Nothing on this site replaces that.

Not stable over time. Teams move, agencies get acquired, and the person who pitched you may not be the person assigned to your account. Check the review date on any list before relying on it.

Independence

Top Agency Lists is an independent publication. We are not owned by, and do not take payment from, any agency featured in these lists. Placement cannot be bought.

Outbound links to agency websites carry a nofollow attribute. No agency has been given advance review of what is written about it.

Corrections

If something here is wrong, out of date, or unfair, tell us and we will fix it. Email editorial@topagencylists.com. Corrections to factual errors are made without conditions and do not require anything in return.
